Diamond Certificate: IGI

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is a globally recognized organization that provides diamond certification services to the jewelry industry. Established in 1975, the IGI has a presence in major diamond trading centers across the world, including New York, Antwerp, Mumbai, Bangkok, and Tokyo.

The IGI diamond certification process involves a comprehensive evaluation of a diamond's quality and characteristics. This includes an assessment of the diamond's cut, clarity, color, and carat weight (4Cs).

The IGI grading system is based on the same parameters as other major grading laboratories, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), but with some slight variations in terminology and their researches trademarked by gemologists.

The cut of a diamond is evaluated based on the quality of its symmetry and proportions, which determine the diamond's brilliance and fire. The highest cut grade for IGI diamonds is “Ideal” while the GIA’s is “Excellent.”

The clarity of a diamond is assessed based on the presence of inclusions, or internal flaws, and blemishes, or surface imperfections. Their evaluation for this metric is how “eye-clean” it looks, or how clear it looks with the naked eye.

The color of a diamond is graded based on a scale that ranges from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).

The carat of a diamond refers to its weight, with one carat equal to 200 milligrams.

The IGI diamond certification report provides a detailed description of each of these characteristics, along with a diagram of the diamond's physical attributes. The report also includes an identification number used to verify the diamond's authenticity and origin.

One of the advantages of IGI diamond certification is its accessibility. The IGI offers a range of certification services, including expedited services for customers who require a quick turnaround time. Additionally, the IGI offers certification services for a wide range of diamonds, including fancy color diamonds, which are highly valued for their unique colors and rarity.

However, it should be noted that the IGI grading system is not always consistent with other major grading laboratories, such as the GIA. But it does not diminish its authority nonetheless. It may only be second to the GIA, but it is one of the largest gemological institutes with leading laboratories and is highly trusted by jewelers all around the world.

Overall, the International Gemological Institute’s diamond certification is a reputable and widely recognized service that provides consumers with valuable information about the quality and characteristics of their diamonds.

While the IGI grading system may differ slightly from other major laboratories, it is still a reliable and trustworthy option for diamond certification. In Brilyo Jewelry, our lab-grown diamonds are GIA and IGI-certified as a mark of our quality gemstones.
