How Lab-Grown Diamonds are Created

Diamonds are one of the most sought-after gemstones in the world, and for good reason. They are known for their exquisite beauty and durability. With the advancements in technology, it is now possible to create lab-grown diamonds that are just as beautiful and durable as their earth-mined counterparts by mimicking the natural process of the creation of earth-mined diamonds.

In this article, we will discuss how lab-grown diamonds are created and why they are considered to be real diamonds.

How Lab-Grown Diamonds are Created

Lab-grown diamonds are created in a laboratory environment using advanced technology. There are two main methods for creating lab-grown diamonds: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

In the HPHT method, a small diamond seed is placed in a high-pressure press and heated to extremely high temperatures. Carbon is then added to the chamber, which crystallizes around the diamond seed, creating a larger diamond. This process can take several weeks to complete.

In the CVD method, a small diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber and heated to high temperatures. A gas mixture containing carbon is then introduced into the chamber, which breaks down and deposits onto the diamond seed, layer by layer, creating a larger diamond. This process can take several days to complete.

Are lab-grown diamonds real?

Because the natural conditions to create a diamond are simply mimicked, lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to earth-mined diamonds. In fact, lab-grown diamonds are so similar to natural diamonds that even experts can't tell them apart without specialized equipment, with the exception of highly technological tools such as the ARI by Presidium.

Lab-grown diamonds are also graded and certified using the same standards made by the GIA and IGI through the 4Cs of diamond quality – cut, clarity, color, and carat weight.

Conclusion

Both the HPHP and the CVD methods create diamonds that are chemically and physically identical to earth-mined diamonds, and are graded and certified using the same standards by the GIA and IGI. Lab-grown diamonds offer a high-quality and affordable option for those seeking a beautiful and durable diamond.
